A.07 - International Mobility
Visas, residence and nationality between Portugal and Brazil
International mobility between Portugal and Brazil involves a growing set of legal and administrative procedures that require coordination between two legal systems. Anyone who decides to live, invest or work outside their country of origin needs technical guidance on visas, residence permits, recognition of qualifications, applicable tax regimes and, in many cases, access to Portuguese or Brazilian nationality.

03 — FAQs
Frequently
asked questions
The most common issues in international mobility processes. Each situation is individual — eligibility must always be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What are the main residence regimes in Portugal for Brazilian citizens?
The most commonly used are the D7 visa (own and regular income), the D2 visa (business activity or self-employment), the D8 visa (digital nomads) and the ARI (Golden Visa), as well as the specific residence regime applicable to students. The choice depends on the applicant’s profile, source of income and intended length of stay. Eligibility must always be assessed individually.
How long does it take to obtain Portuguese nationality?
The statutory timeframe depends on the grounds for the application. There are cases of attribution (declaratory) and cases of acquisition by naturalisation, the processing of which depends on the length of lawful residence, knowledge of the language and evidence of the other requirements. Actual administrative timeframes have varied in recent years and must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Can Portuguese citizens live and work in Brazil without a visa?
Portuguese citizens benefit from specific regimes, namely the Equality of Rights and Civil Obligations Status and the Political Equality Status, which grant rights close to those of Brazilian nationals. Obtaining these statuses depends on a specific procedure before the Brazilian authorities.
